Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” -- WHO

According to WHO our health doesn’t merely come from the fact that we are symptom or illness free. There is more to it. Our health consists of good nutrition, physical health and mental well-being. On top of this, the fact whether the individual is healthy or not cannot be judged by the appearance (1). How we perform at work, our relationships or the quality of our sleep are all affected by these factors.

This article is designed to give an insight into the different aspects of health and to give tips to the readers about how to look after it.

Exercise

By health organization the recommendation is that adults should aim to be physically active every day.

More specifically they suggest doing 150 mins of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week. Movement can be spread across the whole week and broken up into small chunks. And it doesn’t have to happen in the gym either, any type would do, but the point is to move. There are studies to show that exercise can positively affect our mental health (2), and our cognitive performance (3).

Here are a few practical tips how to squeeze exercise into our daily lives without going into the gym:

  • Cycle to work.
  • Take a short walk on your lunch break.
  • Use the steps instead of the elevator or escalator.
  • Do some stretches in between the long hours of sitting at your desk.

Good Nutrition

Healthy eating is key when it comes to our overall health. Probably this aspect is the most self-evident as eating is crucial for survival and we practice it every day. If we don’t eat adequate amounts or our diet is not balanced enough, we just don’t feel our best self.

We should aim to have a varied balanced diet that includes all kinds of food in moderation. This would provide all of the key nutrients that are essential for our body to function properly. On top of the nutrients it’s also important to remember that food is providing fuel for us and keeps us moving through our busy day, so if we don’t pay attention to eat good and quality foods or we skip meals in the hope of weight loss we could easily find ourselves feeling blue and low on energy. Studies also associate nutritional deficiencies with poorer cognitive functions (4), and lower levels of happiness (5).

Here are some practical tips you can start to implement in your weekly diet to start to see changes in the quality of your life:

  • Always have some fruit in your house.
  • Where possible opt for wholegrains.
  • Add legumes to your meat dishes to increase your fibre intake.
  • Don’t forget about your water intake.
  • Limit your sweet intake.


What we see is that the different aspects of our health are very closely intertwined and just by eating well is not necessarily enough in order to maintain it.
